Francis Drake Bowls Club |
Saturday the 14th of September seven rinks and thirty four players lined up for battle. The atmosphere was electric. The Beckenham, Bromley and District Bowling Association finals day had arrived.
Francis drake had nine players altogether. In the triples were Sylvie Anderson, Jeanette Singer, and Mick Singer. In the Triples League (two teams) Ron Philips, Tony Ferguson and Stan Augar, second triple were Beryl Philips, Dave Fricker and David Singer. The sun was shining and the scene set. Sylvie, Jeanette and Mick started well and everything seemed pretty even until Bellingham just edged in front and won by 5 points.Beryl, Dave and David got off to a great start, confident and focused on rink two. Ron, Tony and Stan struggled to find the quirks of rink one, and the match looked to be slipping away at 15-4. Meanwhile Beryl, Dave and David's opponents, Orpington Excelsior, pulled back to all square, but the Drakes stayed focused and ended with a good win. Now it was all down to Ron Tony and Stan, could they find a way back? Could they dig deep? Yes they could and with lots of support from the crowd they found another level and started to pull back, their opponents felt the pressure and began to make mistakes. Ron Tony and Stan took full advantage and romped home to win their game and secure the Triples League trophy for Francis Drake!
